Eastern
Industries Group, Inc. EIG was started by two former executives of Fiberstars, Inc. Fred N. Martin, former Chief Operating Officer of Fiberstars, was also a former President of both Prescolite Lighting and Progress Lighting, and the former Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Hanson Lighting. Simon Chen was Vice President of Engineering for Fiberstars and Director of Engineering for Watt Stoppers. During Fred’s career as a lighting fixture manufacturing executive, it became apparent that for lighting fixture manufacturers to compete in a world market it would be necessary to find ways to substantially reduce their product costs. |

larger conglomerate lighting fixture manufacturers solved this dilemma early
on by taking their high volume and labor cost parts abroad for offshore
production. They used offshore brokers to find offshore manufacturers to
make parts for them and kept their in country employees to manage the import
process. Simon has been very much involved during his career in setting up both Taiwanese and Chinese manufacturers to supply parts and finished products to his U.S. employers. With his Masters of Electrical Engineering from the University of Massachusetts, Simon also functions as the far-east Engineering Director for EIG customers. Fred and Simon have found that their tooling costs consistently average sixty percent to seventy percent less than U.S. suppliers and fifty percent less on their piece prices. The timing of when the client can expect their product may also be surprisingly quick to EIG customers. With an average of twelve to sixteen weeks for U.S. production, EIG customers are blown away at the average six weeks production time we boast with our Chinese factories.
